Chen Min, technical director of TSMC (China) Co., Ltd.: mass production of 3-nanometer products will be realized in the second half of this year

    On the morning of August 18, Chen Min, technical director of TSMC (China) Co., Ltd., made a speech at the 2022 World Semiconductor conference and Nanjing International Semiconductor Expo. He said that the R & D of TSMC‘s 3-nanometer products was progressing very smoothly, and the mass production of 2-nanometer products was expected to be realized in the second half of this year.
    According to Chen Min, in terms of advanced manufacturing technology, TSMC‘s 5-nanometer products have been mass produced for more than 3 years, with a total shipment of more than 2 million pieces. The products are widely used in smart phones, AI, HPC (High Performance Computing) and other products. At present, the 5nm family has new members, such as N4, n4p and n4x. The addition of new members enables customers to obtain better PPA (performance, power consumption and area) performance from the products of the 5nm family.
    Chen Min said that in addition to continuous research and development of advanced manufacturing technology, TSMC has also increased research and development of 3D ICs. 3D fabric is the continuous development and improvement of 3D ICs by TSMC over the past 10 years. Customers use products produced by TSMC 3D fabric, which has improved the efficiency of the entire system.
    In addition, Chen Min said that in terms of mature process technology, the demand of TSMC customers is also increasing, including RF technology, image sensing unit, NVM, nonvolatile, memory and ultra-low power consumption products. "Customer demand is increasing year by year. We will also speed up investment in the production capacity of mature processes. It is expected that in the next few years, our production capacity in mature processes will also be increased by a considerable amount."
