On December 7, Cui Taiyuan, chairman of SK Group of South Korea, said that although there was no plan to establish a semiconductor wafer factory in the United States at present, the preconditions for such investment were being studied, and it was not ruled out to set up a factory in the United States. Cui Taiyuan said that the United States is a huge market, but human resources and costs are still a problem. Although there are many local software engineers, there are not many semiconductor technical engineers.
It is reported that SK Hynix, a subsidiary of SK Group, will set up a business department in North America. The department will also set up a new research and development unit to promote Hynix‘s "Inside America" strategy and strengthen the cooperation of global ICT enterprises.
In addition, SK Group is interested in the battery business in North America. SK On, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, signed a cooperation agreement with Ford in May to establish a battery production joint venture in the United States.
