According to foreign media reports, Bosch Group of Germany announced on Wednesday that it will acquire the assets of American chip manufacturer TSI Semiconductor Company to expand its silicon carbide chip (SiC) semiconductor business.
At present, Bosch and TSI have reached an agreement, but the specific details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, and this acquisition still requires regulatory approval.
According to the data, TSI is a foundry for specialized integrated circuits (ASICs). At present, we mainly develop and produce a large number of chips on 200mm silicon wafers for applications in industries such as mobile, telecommunications, energy, and life sciences.
Bosch has been producing semiconductors for more than 60 years and has invested billions of euros worldwide, especially in the water plants in Loytlingen and Dresden, Germany. Bosch believes that this acquisition will strengthen its international semiconductor manufacturing network.
Bosch stated that after the acquisition is completed, it will invest $1.5 billion in the next few years to upgrade TSI Semiconductor‘s manufacturing facility in Rosville, California. Starting from 2026, the first batch of chips will be produced on 200mm wafers based on silicon carbide.
In recent years, with the accelerated introduction of photovoltaic energy storage scenarios and the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the silicon carbide market will maintain a supply-demand situation. Especially the launch of electric vehicles has further driven the demand for automotive chips. With the increase of functions such as autonomous driving, the number of car chips is about 1200.
Bosch Group CEO Stefan Hartung also stated that the growth of electric vehicles indicates that the demand for silicon carbide chips is "exploding".
According to market research firm TrendForce, with the clarification of cooperation projects between major manufacturers and automotive and energy industries, the overall SiC power component market output value will reach 2.28 billion US dollars in 2023, with an annual growth of 41.4%. In addition, TrendForce Consulting expects the SiC power component market output to reach $5.33 billion by 2026.
