On May 18th, according to the official website of eMagin, a Micro OLED developer based in Duchess County, New York, Samsung Display will acquire eMagin for $218 million, and the merger is expected to be completed in the second half of 2023.
EMagin stated in a statement that Samsung Display will acquire all of eMagin‘s issued common shares at a 10% per share premium of approximately $2.08, with a total transaction amount of approximately $218 million. EMagin has been committed to developing Micro OLED technology for many years and is a leader in the Micro OLED display industry in the United States. Its products are mainly used for high-resolution AR/VR devices, covering consumer, military, medical, and industrial fields.
Industry insiders point out that SDC‘s acquisition of eMagin is aimed at strengthening the development of RGB OLEDoS technology. In the short term, Samsung Display will continue to use WOLED CF technology, with the long-term goal of developing RGB OLEDoS and targeting the supply of displays to Apple MR devices. As a close eye display device, MR equipment has extremely high requirements for the image quality, craftsmanship, and other aspects of the display screen. Industry sources say that the Oledos panel of Apple‘s hybrid reality device will be led by Sony in the coming years, and it is expected that Sony will provide the Oledos for Apple‘s first MR device released this year.
