In a 30000 acre wilderness reserve in Scottsdale, drones occasionally fly overhead. It is usually used to monitor whether there is an invasive plant species that not only causes wildfires, but also suppresses or eliminates nearby local plants.
The species that poses this environmental threat is the water buffalo grass.
Employees and volunteers of the McDowell Sonoran Nature Conservancy, with the help of Intel, use drones and artificial intelligence technology to search the desert surface, find and eliminate this non local grass species. What used to require association volunteers to carry out on-site work with a large amount of manpower to record can now be quickly completed within a few hours through aerial drone surveys and artificial intelligence processing.
