What is the solution to the difficulty of managing the charging and discharging of multiple lithium-ion batteries with the Type-C interface being unified

Time:2023-06-11 Views:873
In the era of USB PD3.0, a charging power of 100W can already meet the charging needs of the vast majority of portable devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc. The latest USB PD3.1 fast charging standard has increased the charging power from 100W to 240W and supports a maximum voltage output of 48V, further extending the fast charging scenario to fields such as IoT devices, smart homes, communication and security devices, automobiles, and healthcare.
From a literal perspective, common portable electronic devices such as vacuum cleaners, power tools, speakers, etc. will no longer require the use of dedicated adapters for charging in the future. A set of Type-C fast charging can be adapted to daily charging devices, which not only brings great convenience to our work and life, but also greatly reduces electronic waste, which is of great significance.
TMI5810 Helps Break Through the Difficulties of Charging and Discharging Management for Multiple Lithium Batteries
However, due to the fact that common portable electronic devices use lithium batteries for power supply, and the power voltage of different devices varies, that is, the number of lithium battery strings used internally varies. The Type-C port needs to be unified to charge electronic devices with different numbers of lithium battery strings. In addition to requiring these electronic devices to be equipped with protocol chips, it is also necessary to achieve charge and discharge management for lithium battery packs of different devices.
The management of charging and discharging multiple lithium batteries has always been a thorny issue, and it is also a challenge that Type-C port unification must solve. To this end, Tuoer Micro has independently developed and designed an efficient synchronous boost and boost power management chip - TMI5810- for bidirectional charging and discharging, which can be paired with a protocol chip to meet the Type-C fast charging requirements of common portable electronic devices, providing a key frame for the unified charging scenario of Type-C port fast charging.

Product features:
·High efficiency, external 4-switch buck boost architecture
·Bidirectional charging and discharging function, supporting 1 to 6 lithium batteries for charging
·Support "input to output" separate resistor setting current limiting values (CC mode)
·Ultra wide input voltage: 2.8V~32V (36V withstand voltage)
·Ultra wide reverse output voltage: 2V~30V
·Input/output current limiting values can support PWM dynamic adjustment
    ·Adjustable switching frequency: 200kHz to 600kHz
    ·QFN-32 (4mm * 4mm) packaging
TMI5810 supports bidirectional charging and discharging, and the charging and discharging process can be easily controlled through the DIR pins——
    ·When the DIR input is low, TMI5810 operates in charging mode and is charged to the battery (VBAT end) through the adapter interface (VBUS end);
·When the DIR input is at high level, TMI5810 operates in discharge mode, discharging from the battery (VBAT end) to the adapter interface (VBUS end).

The internal principle is that the TMI5810 has a Buck Boost architecture with four external switches, ensuring a smooth and stable transition of the circuit in multiple working modes of Buck, Boost, and Buck Boost. And charging supports 1-6 lithium batteries, with a wide voltage range of 2.8-32V (36V withstand voltage) input and 2-30V reverse output, which can meet the voltage input of most portable electronic products and the power supply application of 12V/24V car chargers, achieving charge and discharge control of multiple lithium battery packs.

Type-C port fast charging has unified most consumer electronics products such as smartphones, laptops, and smart wearables, bringing great convenience to our lives and work. The European Union announced the unified use of Type-C ports in 2024. It is estimated that after the unification of charging ports, it will not only save consumers 250 million euros/year, but also reduce 11000 tons of Electronic waste.
Technology has changed our lives, and every one of us will benefit from it. This is also our pursuit and vision of Tuoer Micro. We hope that every technological micro innovation can bring innovative vitality to electronic products and provide more convenience for everyone‘s work and life.
