Do brushless motors require a driver to rotate

Time:2023-10-14 Views:523
Do brushless motors require a driver to rotate?
Brushless motor is an efficient, low noise, and stable motor. Unlike traditional brush motors, brushless motors do not have carbon brushes on their rotors, so they do not require lubrication and operate more stably. Due to these advantages, brushless motors are widely used in various fields, such as automobiles, industry, healthcare, home appliances, etc.
However, brushless motors require special drivers to rotate. This is because the control signal of the brushless motor is a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal, and the motor driver will adjust the speed and direction of the motor based on this signal. Without a motor driver, control signals cannot be transmitted to the motor and the motor cannot function properly. Therefore, a brushless motor must have a driver to rotate.
Specifically, there are several connection methods between brushless motors and drivers:
    1. Three wire connection
Three wire connection is the most common connection method. This connection method requires three cables, namely, the three output lines of the motor are connected to the three output lines of the driver. This connection method is suitable for situations where steering needs to be determined, such as fans, water pumps, etc.
    2. Two wire connection
A two wire connection requires a capacitor in the middle of one coil of the motor, and then connected to the two output lines of the driver. This connection method is suitable for situations where the direction of the motor needs to be periodically changed, such as electric tools.
    3. Four wire connection
The four wire connection is a variant of the three wire connection, which requires an external controller to control the direction of the motor. This connection method is suitable for situations where customized motor steering is required, such as robots, electric vehicles, etc.
In addition to the connection method, choosing the appropriate motor driver is also very important. Generally speaking, the selection of motor drivers should be determined based on the model, voltage, power, and load characteristics of the motor. If the driver is not selected properly, it will reduce the efficiency and lifespan of the motor, and may even lead to motor damage.
It should be noted that although brushless motors require a driver to rotate, the driver is not required for every brushless motor. Some small motors, such as mobile phone vibration motors, can rotate through internal drive circuits without the need for external drivers.
In summary, brushless motors require a driver to rotate. The driver controls the speed and direction of the motor by receiving control signals, while ensuring the efficiency and lifespan of the motor. When selecting a drive, it is important to pay attention to the model, voltage, power, and load characteristics of the motor to ensure its normal operation.
