The operating rate of Samsung‘s fab in Xi ‘an has recovered to about 70 percent. The plant is Samsung Electronics‘ only overseas production of memory chips, which account for 40 percent of its total NAND output.
Sources said that in the second half of 2023, the fab‘s operating rate once fell to 20% to 30%, which is the lowest point since the end of 2022 memory chip prices and demand began to decline.
Sources said the recent upturn in operating rates was spurred by surging demand for smartphones in the Chinese market.
The price of NAND began to recover in October last year and has risen every month since.
Due to the increase in operating rates, Samsung Electronics is also ordering more NAND components from South Korean suppliers.
According to people familiar with the matter, Samsung has asked suppliers to increase inventory levels to cope with the increase in orders.
Some suppliers, such as Dongjin semhem and Soulbrain, have seen a surge in shipments of NAND components to Samsung, they said.
